Autism Characteristics
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has three core deficits: Communication impairment: A delay or lack of development of spoken language and gestures. Social interactions are impaired: Inability to develop peer relationships due to a lack of spontaneous sharing, social skills, or emotional reciprocity.

Does not notice when others are hurt or upset by 2 years of age

Does not notice other children and join them in play by 3 years of age

Seizure disorder or epilepsy

Problems with the gastrointestinal tract (for example, constipation)

Anxiety, stress, or over-worrying

Fearlessness or more fear than expected

Hyperactive, impulsive, and/or inattentive behavior

Delayed language skills

Delayed cognitive or learning skills

Sets toys or other items in a line and becomes irate if the order is changed.

Repeatedly uses the same words or phrases (called echolalia)

Uses the same playstyle with toys every time.

Is concentrated on object components (for example, wheels)

Upset by even small changes

Possesses obsessions

Must adhere to certain procedures

Has unusual reactions to sounds, smells, tastes, sights, or feelings. Flaps hands, rocks body, or spins around.
